Let Me Introduce You To…Cornhole
Yesterday, I was strolling through the park with my friend, Bryan. We were having a heated debate over what we should do for the rest of the day. I said hit the beach. He said it was too much work – go home, pack a bag, navigate traffic, fight the crowds, and then spend the rest of the week cleaning sand out of the car. He wanted to gather some friends for a game of softball. I said all our friends were busy. And, I didn’t have an ounce of skill that would be beneficial on a softball field.
Finally, we reached a stalemate and called it quits. We flopped down on the grass to people watch. About 10 yards away from us, the most fascinating thing was happening. Two guys were standing beside inclined, wooden platforms, each with a hole in the center. They took turns tossing something (I couldn’t tell what it was) at the opposite board. I poked Bryan and nodded at the spectacle. At the same time, we both jumped up to go check it out.The guys told us they were playing a game called cornhole (which they said could also be called corn toss). Each player had four bags (filled with beans or corn) they could score with. The two players alternate their “pitches” from the “pitcher’s box” (at either side of the board) until all the bags had been thrown. The following “inning,” play resumes at the other board. The scoring was pretty straight forward too. A bag that goes through the hole (either pitched there or knocked in by the other player) scores three points. A bag that lands on the board or “in-the-court,” scores one point. Usually, a game is played until one competitor reaches or exceeds 21 points.
